The thought of a child drowning in their swimming pool strikes fear into the heart of every residential pool owner. Whether their concern is for their own children, neighborhood youngsters, or both, their fears are legitimate – according to the Centers for Disease Control , drowning is the leading cause of injury death for children aged one to four, and three children die every day as a result of drowning.

The pleasure of owning a swimming pool is accompanied by added responsibility in terms of keeping children safe. While no pool safety measure is a placement for alert adult supervision when a child is in or around a swimming pool, there are products that provide additional peace of mind. In this article, we’ll provide a guide to swimming pool alarms and child detection devices.

Swimming Pool Alarms

Gate Alarms: All swimming pools should be fenced in for safety (many states require it), but the gate makes the fence vulnerable to intrusion by children with nimble little fingers and natural curiosity about the pool. Gate alarms, as well as door alarms, go off even when the child closes the gate or door behind them. Gate alarms are helpful when you have houseguests or parties because they will not allow anyone to accidentally leave the gate open.

Door Alarms: Door alarms alert the homeowner when a child opens a door leading to the pool area. Many children drown when they go outside through the back door of the house when left unsupervised. Both door and gate alarms that offer a pass-through feature for adults are available. Door alarms are available for regular doors, screen doors, and sliders and can be purchased in combination packs with gate alarms.

Window Alarms: The function of window alarms is similar to that of door alarms and provides protection for adventuresome children who could access the pool from the house without using a door or gate. Window alarms typically require the pool owner to turn them on, so they are vulnerable to user error.

Perimeter Alarms: Perimeter alarms use laser or infrared light to form an unbroken beam around the perimeter of the swimming pool. When someone or something disrupts the beam, an alarm sounds. The beam can be adjusted to be appropriate for the height of household or neighborhood children. Perimeter alarms are expensive relative to the other alarm types discussed here.

Fence/Wall Alarms: Motion-activated infrared alarms can be used on the fence or wall around the swimming pool. They usually cover a semi-circular area up to eight yards.

Voice Alarms: Voice alarms are triggered by movement to alert pool owners with a pre-recorded message when someone enters the pool area. They typically include two to three censors that cover a 140-square yard area.

Swimming Pool Child Detection Devices

Inground Pool Alarm: Pool alarms activate when anything over a certain weight breaks the surface of the water. The alarm goes off at the pool and also at a remote receiver placed inside the home. The alarm cannot be deactivated and will go off if someone removes it from the pool. To use the pool, an adult removes the alarm and puts it in a “sleep” mode. Pool alarms can be used with solar blankets.

Wristbands: Pool safety wristbands sound an alarm when the band is immersed in water, so they prevent children playing in the area from falling into the swimming pool undetected. Wristbands require no installation and are portable, providing protection when visiting other homes and on vacation.

No one wants even to imagine the tragedy of having a child drown in their swimming pool. Protect your family and others with a well thought-out combination of swimming pool safety alarms.
